INITIAL TEST ON A 1.5MeV LINEAR INDUCTION ACCELERATION

  • A 1.5MeV linear induction accelerator has been constructed in China Aca demy of Engineering Physics. This machine consists of six induction modules.four of which are connected in series by a cathode stem to drive a cold emitter diode, other two are used as a post-accelerator.The diode has a planar configuration and its emitter is made of velvet. Each module is energized by a 10.8ohm.Water-insulated Blumlein pulse forming line and all the Blumleins are charged by one Marx generator.A near-continuous array of solenoids is used to confine the beam.Initial testing on the accelerator has been completed The diode and acceleration voltages are obtained through summing the voltages of the corresponding capacitve probes. The total emitted and beam currents are measured by the resistor monitors. The peak emitter current is 8.4kA.beam current 2.8kA.diode voltage 1 MV and acceleration voltage 0.5MV.Preliminary measurements of the beam emittance have been performed using a 1mm thick perforated brass plate as a sampling target and an aluminum-backed phosphor screen as a scintilla-tor.From these measurements, the emittance is estimated to be 70 mrad-cm.The testing is going on in order to improve the quality of the beam.
